What are gemstones?
Gem stones are semi-precious/precious stones that are recommended by astrologers as per the birth chart of a person. Gemstones are minerals which naturally occur in nature. These gemstones can be Diamond (Hira), Red Coral (Munga), Yellow Sapphire, Ruby etc.
So, how does gemstone actually work?
There are 100 main nadis in “Prana Body” of human beings. Each of them further has 72,000 nadis each. Touch or light filtered from gemstones or even vicinity (within the environment) to these stones cleanse a particular set of nadis of a human. Through a birth chart, an astrologer finds out which gemstone is required for a person that will help him/her grow better.
What should be the size of gemstone one should wear?
Actually, there is NO opinion in any ancient astrological works on the size of gemstone that one should wear.
But some pandits recommend the size of a gemstone, so how do they do it?
As a thumb rule, 1 ratti is recommended for every 12 kg of body weight. So, if your body weight is 72 kg, pandit is likely to recommend approximately 6 ratti for the gemstone.
So, what is ratti?
Ratti is a unit of weight.
1 kacchi ratti = 120 mg (Used in Haryana/Punjab)
1 pakki ratti = 180 mg (Rest of the country)
Normally, when we say ratti, it means pakki ratti i.e., 180 mg
Is there anything more to ratti?
Yes ? . Ratti can be savva (सवा - as in सवा एक, 1.25), Sadhe (साढ़े – as in साढ़े सात, 7.5), Pauna (पौना – as in पौने सात, 6.75).
Savva is considered auspicious, Sadhe is okay and Pauna is not auspicious.
Upto 0-0.35 ratti is considered as Savva.
Upto 0.35-0.75 ratti is considered as Sadhe.
Upto 0.75-1 ratti is considered as Pauna.
So, suppose, 6 ratti ruby is recommended, then buying a stone of 6 to 6.35 ratti is auspicious, 6.35 to 6.75 is okay and 6.75 to 7.00 is not auspicious.
Is there anything else to consider while buying gemstone?
While buying a gemstone, 4 ‘C’ are normally considered (except for stones like red Munga, Pearl etc). This is just a guide and NOT a hard-and-fast rule. If these rules are followed, the stones will get more and more expensive.
Cut – Should touch the skin if possible. If not, atleast sunrays should pass through the stone and touch the skin.
Colour – Colour of stone must be of the planet that it represents. Colour should not be dull, milky, or show cracks.
Clarity – Stone should be as clear as possible. Light should pass through it unobstructed.
Carat (Ratti) – 1 carat (or 100 cents) is equal to 200 mg. 1 Ratti is equal to 180 mg. Cost of stone will rise with more Carat/Ratti.
Does this mean that the higher the ratti of stone the better it will work?
The working of gemstones does not depend on higher ratti in a sense. However, more the surface area and better the quality of stone, better it will work.
For better understanding, for the same ratti, if the surface area of stone is more, better it will work.
Does the ring in which gemstone is set matters?
Yes. Correct gemstones in the wrong metal ring can have immense adverse effects. For example, Red munga (for Mars) in a silver ring will have negative effects rather than positive. Similarly, Pearl in gold can cause immense mental trauma.
Does the finger in which gemstone is worn matters?
Yes. Gemstone cleans a particular set of nadis. Different nadis pass through different fingers. Wearing gemstone in the wrong finger may have no effects at best and immense adverse effects at worst.
Can Gemstone be worn as a Pendant or any other place?
As the main purpose of gemstones is to clean a particular set of nadi, it is best to wear it with specified fingers. However, as heart is one of the places from where tons of nadis meet (at Anahata chakra or Heart chakra), wearing gemstone near to heart area can also be recommended.
If the gemstones are worn as jewellery for a few hours, then it is not necessary to think about it from an astrological point of view.
Is there any standard chart for ratti for gemstones which can be referred to?
Yes, there is a generally referred chart that can be referred to.
