About hawan in Ramayana period
Agnihotra (Offering to fire) or Hawan was an important part of daily life during Ramayana time. In “Valmiki Ramayana” (the original Ramayana) there are numerous occasions where it says, “It’s time for agnihotra now, let’s continue after performing agnihotra”. The importance of Agnihotra can be understood from the fact that people used to stop other activities to perform daily hawan.
There is another important incident in Ramayana which is very baffling. During the famous Ram-Bharat milap, Shri Ram specifically enquires if the smoke of Agnihotra covers the entire Ayodhya or not. Did Shri Ram want the entire capital to be polluted?
Does Hawan really cause Air Pollution?
Let us understand how air quality is judged. Air Quality Index is measured in PM2.5 and PM10 scale. PM2.5 and PM10 means that any particle of 2.5 / 10 micron and less shall be treated as a pollutant!!! So, ordinary things like room spray, cooking, frying, burning candles etc causes air pollution by this definition. By this definition, there is NO difference between fumes of a car and fragrance of cooking. At some point we must realize the difference between toxic, neutral and therapeutic particles in PM2.5/PM10 and stop calling it pollution.
Many scientific research points towards the fact that Hawan smoke purifies air. They have a disguising effect on various pollutants in the atmosphere including the oxides of sulphur. Surplus Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is also reduced to formaldehyde which acts as a powerful antiseptic with germicidal action.
The final take (as taken from published scientific research papers)
Hawan is a process in which special herbs are offered in the fire of medicinal woods ignited in a specially designed fire pit. Due to high temperature of fire, the vapors of these oils from herbs enter the central nervous system through the nasal route. As per modern science and ancient texts on medicine, nasal drug delivery systems are the best for the diseases related to brain and head including anxiety disorders, irritability, fear, insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, inability to concentrate, poor coping skills, palpitation, sweating, agoraphobia and social withdrawal.
The serotonin, dopamine, GABA and noradrenaline are four major neurotransmitters that regulate mood and are normally kept in balance with all the other neurotransmitters and neuropeptides within the central nervous system. All these are activated while performing a Hawan.
As per modern science, it is a known fact that nasal drug delivery systems are the best drug delivery systems for the diseases related to the brain. The traditional systems of treatment of physical diseases employ medicines that are mostly administered orally and therefore produce effects only after absorption into the system.
Sandalwood oil and agarwood vapors have shown antianxiety activity on exposure as an inhalational route. Tagarwood is used as ethno-medicine for the treatment of insomnia, epilepsy, neurosis, anxiety, etc. Clove oil stimulates the circulatory system, clearing the mind and reducing mental exhaustion. It has also been used to aid insomnia, memory loss, anxiety and depression. Til has shown antianxiety potential in various studies. Ber is widely used for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and calming effects. Saffron with its mood-elevating effects also displays anxiolytic activity. Jatamansi induces a state of resistance against stress. Nutmeg’s (Dal chinni) offer mild sedative, antianxiety and pain-relieving benefits, by virtue of activation of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. The medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) in pure Ghee get converted into ketones and provide energy to the anxiety patient that will support processes in the brain that are involved in healing and repair. Camphor when burnt, the body’s breathing system is cleared quickly and the person will experience a ‘‘high’’ or have a feeling of being elevated.
In short, Hawan has been designed by the ancient scholars to fight a number of diseases related to the brain. Most of the components have been found to be having antianxiety activity through one or other mechanism. It can be concluded that the routine of performing Hawan provides a satisfactory therapeutic value to fight with psychiatric diseases and help in preventing anxiety.

Thanks for such a detailed and scintifically linked explanation of hawan and its impact on us. Please clarify what should be the frequency of hawan and best time to perform.
Thanks for your appreciation. Ideally as per our shastra, Hawan should be done twice daily i.e. at sunrise and sunset. However, in today's hectic life that is not practical. If possible, do hawan once or twice a week or atleast on special occasions like Akshya Tritya, Guru-Pushya Yog, etc. If that is not possible, burn hand full of hawan samagri with camphor and little ghee. This is called "Dhunna" in North-East part of country and is performed on daily basis. This will certaily help our minds cope with today's stressfull environment. .
Thank you for this simple yet effective explanation. In our tradition we burn charcoal along with ajwain. Since in metro cities charcoal is very difficult to get we burn coconut shell also known as karwanti with ajwain. This smoke brings back uterus to normal size after pregnancy, prevents urine infection, cold cough, breathing issues, ear infection, new borns are bathed in this smoke to prevent viral infection, clothes can be sanitized by this smoke and benefits are never ending. Though it's not hawan but when we do hawan with numerous herbs benefits are unimaginable. Thank you
Thanks a lot for unknown facts and scientific reasons about hawan liked it.....
Most of the hawan ingredients are always available at home but it's hardly given that importance it deserves. Thank you bhaiya for simplifying and sharing such detailed information. Your blogs are always useful.
